Election Bell Rings

first_imgofficial announcement of the date of the election said he is “confident will be free and fair elections, following a spirited but peaceful campaign.” Related Items:#Electionbellrings, #magneticmedianews Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppBahamas, April 11, 2017 – Nassau – On Wednesday 10th April 2017, the people of the Bahamas will finally be able to have a say as to which political party they want to lead the country for the next five years. This comes after Prime Minister Perry Christie officially announced the date of the next general election at his office this morning. However, before Bahamians are able to voice their concerns with a ballot, many have taken to social media, the people’s platform, to voice their opinions on Christie’s announcement. While some voters took to Facebook to proudly state, “going all the way through with the PLP”. Others claim they will “Roc with Doc.” It was evident that both the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) and the Free National Movement (FNM) had online support in the hundreds today. Persons supporting the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) online presence were lesser in comparison. Some however, were more concerned with the date itself. One person wrote, “in the middle of National GLAT Exams and the day of the sinking of the HMBS Flamingo, one of the worst national disasters in Bahamian history. Who advised this?” Another Bahamian said,  “They should of leave that day Sacred for those Marines who died on H.M.B.S Flamingo, May 10th, 1980.” Many persons were of the belief that this date already holds a lot of significance to the country and an election should not be scheduled on the same day. On the other hand, members of the parliament have also voiced their concerns.  Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Phillip Davis yesterday made a bold predication in an interview on a radio talk show.  He told the host of “Donald Miller Live” that the PLP will win 30 seats in the upcoming general election and the FNM will win nine.   If however, the FNM were to come out victorious, Davis questioned whether Dr. Minnis would remain the leader of the FNM. Prime Minister Christie, in his official announcement of the date of the election said he is “confident will be free and fair elections, following a spirited but peaceful campaign.”In addition to Facebook, the announcement of an election in one month raised a lot of chatter on Twitter as well. The office of the Prime Minister even took to Snapchat to announce the date. Despite differences in political preference, one thing is certain; the people of the Bahamas are ready to vote.Story by: Kay-Marie Fletcher#MagneticMediaNews#Electionbellringscenter_img Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApplast_img read more

Major Road Closure Starts This Weekend

first_img 00:00 /00:00 X To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: Listen Gail DelaughterSpur 5 crosses over Elgin Street at the University of Houston.Northbound Spur 5 at I-45 is closing Friday night to make way for a major reconstruction project. We discussed the project with TxDOT’s Deidrea George:“We’re taking away the access from Spur 5 to I-45 if you’re coming from the University of Houston area,” says George. Those detours go into place as TxDOT prepares to start work on new northbound connectors linking I-45 to U.S. 59. George says the $30 million project is designed to eliminate the weaving that bogs down traffic. “A lot of time motorists are trying to get to 59 and 288 and they’re having to travel two, three, and four lanes to get over to access that,” explains George. “While those already in the left lane have to get over to access I-45 North.”     Northbound Spur 5 at I-45 will close at 9:00 Friday night and TxDOT expects to have detours in place for about seven months. The connector project should be finished in 2019. Sharelast_img read more

Randi Zuckerberg Dont Search for That PieintheSky Mentor

first_img Register Now » Many entrepreneurs believe that to find success they need to find the perfect mentor — that one person who’s been through it all.But Randi Zuckerberg, a tech investor and media producer, says entrepreneurs shouldn’t waste time on such a pursuit.”A lot of us think that we need to find that pie-in-the-sky mentor who’s going to help with our businesses,” the former director of market development at Facebook told me at CES in the American Greetings booth. “Over the years, I realized that person will always disappoint you, because the kind of stuff you’re working on didn’t exist when they were starting out in their careers, so how are they going to give you advice? When you do connect with them, they won’t have the time for you.”As an alternative, she suggests upcomers find or form a mentor group of peers.”Your peers are going to be the best mentors you’ll ever have, because you can bounce ideas off of them and you will all rise together,” she said.Related: Why Tyra Banks Cold-Called Zappos’s Tony HsiehZuckerberg has taken on a lot of projects since 2011, when she left the company her brother Mark co-founded. She started Zuckerberg Media, performed on Broadway in Rock of Ages, served as a mentor and judge on the TV show Quit Your Day Job and adapted her children’s book, Dot., into a TV series.Zuckerberg’s surprising take on mentors wasn’t the only thing she shared. Here are some other interesting tidbits from our conversation:On this year’s big marketing trend.”It’s really going to come down to storytelling and live video. Video is a way to tell a story that is so much more powerful. I think there’s also a real trend toward going retro. We’re going to see reminders of how we used to get back in touch with people.”On what people really want out of media.”We live in a world where there’s so much noise, you have to almost always create scarcity out of nothing. Live video creates scarcity. A handwritten note is scarcity because your time is valuable. People want to feel like they’re not missing anything. Consumers want to feel unique, special and heard.”On her top tip for an effective Facebook Live.”Start out with some great nuggets of information. For me, whenever I do a Facebook Live, I start out with a top three list or ‘here’s my topic, like or dislike?’ and immediately start to engage people. I think often, people are like, ‘hey, I’m here,’ and you lose people. Also, if you’re going to commit to a Facebook Live, you should be on for 10 minutes. If you’re only going to do it for one or two minutes, you should do a recorded video instead. As soon as possible, make it about the audience.”Related: This Crowdfunding Category Will Blow Up in 2017, Says the CEO of IndiegogoOn what technology she finds most exciting, but also risky for children.”Virtual reality is so exciting to me on so many levels for what can happen in medicine, charitable givings, travel, architecture, you name it. I also think from a kid’s content perspective: What happens when you immerse children in violent video games? What happens 10 years later? Can you create false memories for children if you put them in VR? Do they think they went on a trip they didn’t go on?”On how performing on Broadway inspired her.”It’s so important for all of us to be able to walk a mile in other people’s shoes, to be well rounded and those experiences have helped me in every facet of my entrepreneurial life. It expanded my creativity in so many ways. It forced me into a situation where I had to put my phone down for four hours every night. It showed me a different method of communicating live with an audience in real time and how powerful that could be.”On the role of hobbies and passions for entrepreneurs.”I love technology and the arts, how could these two paths come together so I can do what I really love? With Dot, that is also born of a passion for getting more diversity in technology. As much as I love the innovation in Silicon Valley, you look around the room and things are pretty bleak in terms of women and people in color. I ultimately came to the hypothesis that this will not be solved in Silicon Valley, but in the media, pop culture, entertainment and the arts.”On how women should pitch investors.”Make sure you’re walking into the room with data. So many women walk into the room and say, ‘I’ve worked hard for this, I deserve this.’ No. That makes me want to give you a hug, not open my checkbook. The other thing is to immediately say at the top of your pitch why you’re the most awesome person to solve this problem. Men always start off their pitches by saying how great they are. For women, it’s a throwaway slide at the back of their decks.”Related: Randi Zuckerberg’s Simple Secret for Juggling Career and KidsOn technology’s role in raising kids (Zuckerberg has two sons).”There are hundreds of ways to introduce children to technology that are creative and fun and doesn’t involve a screen. Even in our own household, there are a few gadgets we have that [teach coding]. People always ask me how much screen time I give my children, and I say very little. Then they say, ‘wait a minute, I thought you were so tech savvy.’ I’m like, ‘that’s a different question. You asked me about screen time.’ We have tons of tech in the household, we just don’t do that much with screens.” Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Get Ready for Digital Pills FDA Clears SelfTracking Drug

first_img This story originally appeared on PCMag 3 min read Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals November 14, 2017 It might sound creepy, but U.S. regulators have approved a drug that can digitally track whether patients have taken their medicine. It’s the first drug in the country with a digital ingestion tracking system, according to the Food and Drug Administration, which announced the approval on Monday. However, the medication is geared only for people diagnosed with certain kinds of mental illness.Called Abilify, the purely chemical version of the drug actually received FDA approval over a decade ago to treat patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.Related: Science and FDA Say Cannabis Is Medicine but DEA Insists It Isn’tHowever, the makers behind it, Japanese company Otsuka Pharmaceutical, developed a new version called Abilify MyCite that comes with a tiny ingestible sensor inside each pill. The sensor is the size of a grain of sand and made from magnesium and copper, according to Proteus Digital Health, the maker of the technology.Patients wear a patch over their torso, which relays a signal between the drug pill and the mobile app. The sensor in the pill will then activate once it’s swallowed and reaches the patient’s stomach fluid. The patch on the torso can also transmit the signal to a web service, where a doctor can examine the data.On Monday, the FDA said the digital drug pill might be useful for some patients. However, Abilify MyCite’s own prescription labeling says it still hasn’t been shown the drug improves “patient compliance” with their treatment, according to the FDA.Related: The FDA Wants to Find Out if Cartoon Drug Ads Are Bad for ConsumersNevertheless, the regulatory approval is a big win for Proteus, which has been promoting its self-tracking pill technology as a way to help patients take their medicine as prescribed. In addition, the company says the ingestible sensor can be used to track psychological data, like the person’s activity level. With the patient’s consent, that data can then be shared with a doctor and family members to help manage the mental illness, Proteus has said in the past while lobbying for FDA approval. However, the idea of a self-tracking pill technology probably won’t be welcomed by all. Comedian Stephen Colbert lampooned the tech back in 2012, joking, “Nothing is more reassuring to a schizophrenic than a corporation inserting sensors into your body.” Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right.
