TORONTO — Former Barrick Gold chief executive Jamie Sokalsky has been appointed a director and the next non-executive chairman of junior gold explorer Probe Mines Ltd.Sokalsky is expected to replace Patrick Reid as chairman after the company’s annual meeting on Oct. 29.Reid is not standing for re-election as a director.Sokalsky was chief financial officer at Barrick from 1999 to 2012 before he became chief executive. He formally stepped down from the top job at Barrick on Monday, following a management shakeup at the gold miner.Probe said Tuesday that Sokalsky has been granted options to acquire 500,000 shares of Probe for a period of five years with an exercise price of $2.41 per share.The junior company’s assets include the Borden gold project and Black Creek chromite deposit, both in Ontario.Shares in Probe were up a penny at $2.42 in trading on the TSX Venture Exchange.The Canadian Press
