No charges will be brought against Serco or their staff. It was also found that the information gathered for the City of London Police was sound enough to conclude that there was “no evidence of any corporate-wide conspiracy or an intention to falsify figures to meet the DRACT contract requirement by senior Serco management or at the board level of the company”. The City of London Police will not be continuing their investigation. The controversy began after the police were asked to investigate allegations of fraud at the FTSE 250 company over a £285m prison contract with the ministry of Justice last year. The Public Accounts Committee recently called for the brake up of big private-sector contracts for government services after documenting the failures of companies such as Serco and G4S.Last month, Serco chairman Alastair Lyons announced his intention to step down. His last year at the company was characterised by slew of profit warnings and “operational mis-steps”. whatsapp Tags: Company Serco Groupcenter_img Share Show Comments ▼ whatsapp Jeff Misenti last_img read more

Dow Jones stock exchange closes at highest level ever following rise in US economic growth

first_img Tags: NULL Show Comments ▼ Sarah Spickernell The Dow Jones stock exchange in the US closed at its highest level ever today, as investors felt encouraged by a rise in economic growth. During the third quarter the US economy grew at its fastest rate in 11 years, with an annual growth rate of five per cent. Previous estimates had placed the country’s growth at a lower value of 3.9 per cent.  The result sent the Dow Jones up by 64 points to 18,024 – the first time it has ever closed above 18,000. Other stock exchanges in the country also benefited – the S&P went up by three points and ended at 2,082.  “That is a solid number, that is really what you want to see, you want to see it in demand,” Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank in Chicago, told Reuters in reference to the Dow Jones success.  “That is a huge plus, a five handle on GDP is astounding to me, but I’m not going to turn it away – Merry Christmas.”A GOOD YEAROver the course of the financial year, the Dow Jones has risen by nine per cent and has experienced 36 record closes. The S&P, meanwhile, has gone through 51 record closes and risen a total of 13 per cent.  Cameron Hinds, regional chief investment officer at Wells Fargo Private Bank, believes there are more gains in the pipeline.  “You have to understand that US economic output is at an all-time high and corporate profits are at an all-time high,” he told the BBC.  “Bull markets typically don’t die purely of old age, they tend to die of recessions and overvaluation and perhaps policy mistakes, and we don’t see any of those on the horizon.” whatsappcenter_img Share Tuesday 23 December 2014 5:36 pm whatsapp Dow Jones stock exchange closes at highest level ever following rise in US economic growth last_img read more

High street suffers Black Friday hangover as retail sales drop

first_imgRETAILERS were hit by a slowdown in sales over Christmas after the Black Friday shopping bonanza pulled forward holiday spending into November. Like-for-like sales dropped by 0.4 per cent compared to the same month a year ago, according to the latest data from KPMG and the British Retail Consortium (BRC). Total sales were up one per cent, which was the slowest December growth since 2008.“It’s now clear that Black Friday did pull festive sales forward into November, and this created a challenging lull in spending with consumers waiting for future bargains,” KPMG’s head of retail, David McCorquodale, said.Sales nevertheless picked up again on Boxing Day as end of season sales drew customers back on to retailer’s websites and into their stores. Non-food sales rose 2.1 per cent, in the three months to December. Food fell by 2.2 per cent, but posted its best monthly performance since Easter. Terror threat in Europe: Belgium put on high alert following deaths of two Islamic extremists

According to officials, they had recently returned from Syria and were planning attacks on Belgian police. A third suspect, who was wounded in the attack, has been arrested.  According to local media, a search following the raid revealed four Kalashnikovs, bomb-making equipment and police clothing. Security forces are now stationed in the area and overnight searches also took place in the Brussels area.  The rise in the terror threat level was announced by prosecutor Eric Van Der Sypt. He said: “The suspects immediately and for several minutes opened fire with military weaponry and handguns on the special units of the federal police before they were neutralised.”  Belgian authorities are expected to provide more details at a briefing later today.  More From Our Partners A ProPublica investigation has caused outrage in the U.S. this weekvaluewalk.comBrave 7-Year-old Boy Swims an Hour to Rescue His Dad and Little Sistergoodnewsnetwork.orgI blew off Adam Sandler 22 years ago — and it’s my biggest regretnypost.comRussell Wilson, AOC among many voicing support for Naomi Osakacbsnews.comKiller drone ‘hunted down a human target’ without being told tonypost.comAstounding Fossil Discovery in California After Man Looks Closelygoodnewsnetwork.orgWhy people are finding dryer sheets in their mailboxesnypost.comNative American Tribe Gets Back Sacred Island Taken 160 Years Agogoodnewsnetwork.orgPolice Capture Elusive Tiger Poacher After 20 Years of Pursuing the Huntergoodnewsnetwork.org Tags: NULLlast_img read more

Wall Street’s revenue consensus has risen 6.2 per cent since September as a result of strong demand for the iPhone 6.Apple’s iPads proved a disappointment with sales falling  18 per cent to 21.4m on the back of fierce competition. Apple boss Tim Cook said in a press release:We’d like to thank our customers for an incredible quarter, which saw demand for Apple products soar to an all-time high. Our revenue grew 30 percent over last year to $74.6 billion, and the execution by our teams to achieve these results was simply phenomenal.Revenue in China climbed 70 per cent and Apple plans to open a further 25 stores in the country. The amount paid by GIC to increase its holding in the TV viewing figures specialist has not been disclosed. GIC, which has been ranked as the eighth-largest fund in the world by the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute, with $320bn of assets, has spent the past year taking on a series of stakes in businesses throughout various emerging and developed markets. Plans for a £2bn float of UK roadside recovery business RAC were thrown off track in September last year, when the fund swooped in to buy a major stake in the firm from private equity owner Carlyle Group. GIC is now joint majority shareholder of RAC together with Carlyle. At the time of that deal, Henry Ormond, senior vice-president of GIC Special Investments, said RAC was a good example of GIC’s investment objectives as a long-term investor because it “combines both consistently strong financial performance, driven by the outstanding quality of service it offers its members, and continued growth potential”.Last year also saw the fund up its holding in online pet store Pets at Home. The Singapore-based fund also holds stakes in Heathrow Airport and the Broadgate office and retail complex in London, and has previously had large stakes in Citigroup and UBS.Shares in Nielsen were narrowly up by around 0.3 per cent on the New York Stock Exchange yesterday. center_img Share Read This Next’A Quiet Place Part II’ Sets Pandemic Record in Debut WeekendFamily ProofHiking Gadgets: Amazon Deals Perfect For Your Next AdventureFamily ProofAmazon roars for MGM’s lion, paying $8.45 billion for studio behind JamesFamily ProofIndian Spiced Vegetable Nuggets: Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofCheese Crostini: Delicious Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofHomemade Tomato Soup: Delicious Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofWhat to Know About ‘Loki’ Ahead of Disney+ Premier on June 9Family ProofChicken Bao: Delicious Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofBaked Sesame Salmon: Recipes Worth CookingFamily Proof Thursday 5 February 2015 8:06 pm Singapore fund boosts stake in TV firm Nielsen Tags: NULLlast_img read more

The Board is grateful for Mr Ashley’s support in the past, and hopes that this support will continue. The Company will, however, continue to make decisions independently of Sports Direct International plc but will co-operate with it and its affiliated companies for their mutual benefit.
